Calton Hill
Calton Hill, or Calton Gardens if you prefer, is a bit of a mix of styles --- one finds an unfinished replica of the Parthenon here, a telescope-shaped observation tower there, an observatory in a traditional building somewhere else --- but it's a great vantage point for a look at Edinburgh.

The Dugald Stewart memorial celebrates a philosopher, gazetteer and mathematician active in the late 1700s to early 1800s. Click here to check him out.

Some say the National Monument, a replica of the Parthenon, was intended to be completed as a war memorial but funds and enthusiasm for the project both ran short. Now it's just a tourist attraction.

This is a view of of Holyrood Palace, from the top of Calton Hill. Holyrood is where ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots lived in exile. Now Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stay there when they're in Edinburgh.

Old Calton Cemetery, on the way back into town, is a bit of a ruin with, sadly, much evidence of vandalism but some beautiful details remain.

This is the tomb of the philosopher David Hume in the cemetery. Hume was a great intellect and a fascinating man. Click here to learn more.
