Prague escaped much of the damage of World War II. Although many of its beautiful old buildings survived, we found -- by shamelessly eavesdropping on a conversation on the train from Budapest -- that in the early years after the fall of Communism, Prague was "gray and depressing". The population had to deal with shortages of everything and it was hardly a Mecca for tourists.

That's changed. Prague is now a crossroads for lovers of history, art, cheap but high-quailty beer, or all three.

We spent 4 days in Prague and it wasn't enough. We hope to repeat the same Budapest-Prague itinerary again!
