The Duomo - Milan's Cathedral

The Duomo has been described as a “wedding cake”. The array of statues was mind-boggling - each one lovingly sculpted even though some were at the very top of the cathedral and barely discernible to people on the ground.

Fortunately, they have an elevator and they let crazy tourists walk all over the roof area. This shot on the left was borrowed from a post card. We actually bought the postcard to get change for the Metro ticket dispenser so we could get back to the hotel. Later we found that all the newsstands sell Metro tickets.

Oh, well. It’s a nice picture.

Two examples of the exquisite stone carving on the facade above the main doors.

And, below, details of the beautifully sculptured spires.

As we walked out onto the roof, Ron made the observation that the entire Cathedral was designed by someone who lacked the equivalent of a high-school education. Just the thing to accompany a mild attack of acrophobia.

But, the city vistas and the close-up views of the detail on the statues were well worth the elevator ride. We even found a nice fellow tourist to take the picture at left.
