We don’t live like the rich and famous most of the time. Honest. We clip grocery coupons, buy generic brands, turn off lights, mow our own lawn....and we own only one car.

But, once in awhile, we like to pull out all the stops. So, on a Saturday night, we got into a London taxi to meet at the apartment (or “flat” as they call it in Britain) of a friend Regina knows through a Web bulletin board of fellow travel fanatics.

The cab was a classic London black taxi, which took us through Trafalgar Square, past Buckingham palace and over the Tower Bridge. The picture at right, typical of this part of the city was taken from the inside of the cab. Already we felt like royalty.

We enjoyed our host's excellent champagne, admired the river view from his flat and then headed for Simpson's in the Strand for a spectacular dinner.

The clock must have struck midnight as we left the restaurant because we turned into a couple of working stiffs from Kansas again -- a light rain fell as we searched out an open entrance to the subway and hopped a train back to our hotel. It was a wonderful evening. Not something to do every weekend, mind you, but we really enjoyed it for one special night.

Our friend’s flat had an extraordinary view of the Tower Bridge. There were 10 of us in the dinner party -- others who had met through the travel website, including a guy who flew in from Washington, DC for the long weekend to join us. (We told you this was a group of travel fanatics.)

Simpson's is a venerable establishment with wood paneling on the walls, attentive service and fantastic food (Enjoy the excellent Wellington but do save room for the treacle sponge with warm vanilla custard for dessert). Gladstone and Disraeli used to dine here. The conversation was lively and we lingered at table till almost midnight -- Simpson’s is a gracious place that doesn’t rush you out when dinner is done.
